Al-Muqabasat is one of the books of Abu Hayyan al-Tawhidi. It is considered one of the most important books authored by al-Tawhidi and one of the most distinguished, as it is closer to being a specialized philosophical book that documents a fertile period in the history of Arab Islamic philosophy in the fourth century AH. The name Al-Muqabasat is derived from the verb qabasa, it is said: "He qabasa a spark, and from it a spark from fire, so I qabasahu: meaning I gave him some of it"... and the meaning of Al-Muqabasat is that two or more persons participate in a scientific or philosophical dialogue, so one of them extracts knowledge and understanding from the other and gives him what he has from it. It appears that al-Tawhidi transcended this definition, so the content of the book is no longer just exchanges between two parties, but rather dialogues, opinions, choices, articles, lectures, hopes, and records of sessions gathered together without order or classification, forming the material of the aforementioned book.
