And the religion, as explained by our ancient philosophers, is a divine position that guides the wise to goodness. The difference between religion, religion, and sect is that the Shariah, in terms of being obeyed, is called religion; and in terms of being comprehensive, it is called a religion; and in terms of being referred to, it is called a sect. It is said: the difference between religion, religion, and sect is that religion is attributed to Allah the Most High, and religion is attributed to the Messenger, and sect is attributed to the jurist. And these words are often used interchangeably. That is why it is said they are united in essence but different in consideration. The word religion is also used for Shariah, which is the Sunnah, i.e., what Allah legislated for His servants of laws and rulings. And in modern philosophy, the word religion has several meanings:
1 - Religion is a set of perceptions, beliefs, and actions that the soul acquires due to its love for Allah, worshiping Him, and obeying His commands.
2 - Religion also is faith in absolute values and working according to them, such as faith in science, or faith in progress, or faith in beauty, or faith in humanity. The virtue of the believer in these values is like the virtue of the worshiper who loves his Creator and acts according to what He legislated; neither is superior to the other except by the attributes of sincerity, love, and devotion, and denial of the self.
3 - Natural religion (naturelle Religion): A term coined in the eighteenth century for the belief in the existence of Allah and His goodness, and the spirituality and immortality of the soul, and the obligation to do good based on the inspiration of conscience and the light of reason. The difference between this natural religion and the positive religion (Religion positive): the first is based on conscience and reason, while the second is based on divine revelation accepted by humans from prophets and messengers.
4 - When the word religion is used for the religion, it indicates a specific group of people whose goal is to glorify and worship Allah, such as Christianity, which has a particular system, laws, traditions, and teachings.
5 - Religion is also a social institution that includes individuals characterized by:
a- Acceptance of some shared rulings and performing some rituals.
b- Belief in absolute values and their affirmation and preservation.
c- Belief that man is connected to a higher spiritual power, separate from this world or permeating it, many or unified.
6 - Among the meanings of religion in the social philosopher (Durkheim) is that it is a social institution based on distinguishing the sacred from the profane, with two aspects: one spiritual composed of beliefs and emotional feelings, and the other material composed of rituals and customs.
