Author Mohamed Ismail takes us back to the 12th and 13th Egyptian dynasties in "The Heirs of Qarun"; to trace the history of Lake Qarun in the Egyptian city of Fayoum. The two dynasties ruled Egypt before the Jews left their land by a few hundred years, leaving behind treasures, as narrated by religious and popular history. In this novel, we follow the journey of a group of friends under the Fayoum sky, perhaps luck will favor them and they will find what is buried in the depths of the lake, or beneath the city’s soil. The treasures of Qarun, or perhaps Amenemhat, or even Ptolemy. From here, the friends, whose paths diverged in life, set out and then met again in middle age, carrying childhood memories and ancestral inheritances with their joys and sorrows. The name of the mysterious lake awakened greed inside them, and their intentions varied, their relationships differed, and only hope remained a line that united them. They want the treasure, and each of them has a desire to fulfill. The more they delve into digging for the inherited treasure, the more they find within themselves what is darker and deeper than the lake.
