Because issues of relying on reports are among the most common debates in Islamic jurisprudence across the centuries—due to their connection to the second source of legislation, which is the noble Sunnah—and despite the many books, chapters, sections, and discussions written on the sciences of the Sunnah, it is a science with its own distinct status among the noble Islamic sciences = yet the field of research and exploration of its secrets still continues. Among the issues related to reports that occupied the methodological approach of hadith, the foundational thought, and theological research are the matters of certainty and doubt in the prophetic Sunnah, the categories of the Sunnah as considered, and the method of distinguishing one report from the other based on either certainty or doubt. In fact, this issue has been the subject of scholarly battles, which have (and still do) have the greatest and deepest impact on the Islamic legal arena. I would not be exaggerating if I said that this issue was a turning point for the different Muslim sects, with their various types and reasons for division.
