This novel is presented by the American novelist Thornton Wilder, who is a novelist and playwright and has won three Pulitzer Prizes. He received these awards for this novel and for two plays (Our Town and The Skin of Our Teeth). He also won the National Book Award for his novel (The Eighth Day). In this novel, Wilder attempts to shed light on the eternal question: Is fate random or is it predetermined and controlled by a higher power? And the search for that higher power. The novel contains five parts. The first part focuses on the collapse of the bridge in 1714 and the fall and death of five people. The second, third, and fourth parts revolve around the lives of those who died and the search for the wisdom behind their deaths. The last part focuses on what happened after that incident. Jonathan Yardley wrote in the Washington Post a comment on this novel; he said: (I was completely amazed not only by Wilder's way of handling the main idea he presented but also by the strength and richness of his prose style).
