Hesse wrote the novel "Demian" in passionate prose while at the peak of his maturity. It is a small-sized book, but small books are often the ones that possess the richest dynamism. And it is clear that Hesse realized that his work takes on a universal character. This is evidenced by the subtitle of the novel and the ambiguous: "A Youth's Tale." Ambiguous because it may include a story of youth in the individual sense, as well as a story of a generation of youth. Hesse did not want the novel to be published bearing his name, but chose a pseudonym for its signature, "Senkler," borrowed from the world of "Holdenrlan," and he only signed it with his real name starting from its tenth edition. "Demian" was a novel that touched the nerve of the phase with an exciting precision, and depicted with an intellectual sense an entire youth that believed that the hero, embodying its deepest hopes, had risen from among them... Although his initial literary direction was towards poetry, he later authored many diverse philosophical novels; some of which carried a tone of skeptical doctrinal reflection, as is evident in his novel Demian; and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1946.
