How can a person be a Muslim French in particular, and a Muslim European in general? This book answers this question through dialogues conducted by the French journalists Cedric Bailoc and Michel Prevo with the Imam of Bordeaux's Great Mosque in France, Sheikh Tarek Oubro, who possesses abundant and extensive knowledge of Islamic religion and Western philosophy, and who has a significant level of commitment to his Islamic faith and pride in the French nationality he holds. He has important echoes within the Muslim community in the third French city. The book is originally aimed at French-speaking readers in general, and specifically at the French, perhaps also at a limited segment of French society that includes Muslims. The book presents metaphysical issues and theological-philosophical problems. It also offers a comprehensive perspective through its discussion of various issues it has addressed, and it is worthwhile for the Arab reader to be aware of problems and issues related to the Islamic existence in Europe in general, including questions of European citizenship, Islam, secularism, and the significance of affiliation to Islam today or, in other words, the meaning of being a Muslim French or—more precisely—a French (or Western in general) who adheres to Islam. Furthermore, this reading, and another motivation for Arabizing the book, is that it opens horizons for Muslims in the lands of Islam or in countries with a majority Muslim population to think, reflect, and perhaps reconsider and reinterpret together, regarding issues related to religious renewal and the application of thought to the profound meanings necessitated by the objectives of Sharia.
