This book revealed another aspect of John Stuart Mill's intellectual interests. It is known that he was preoccupied with issues of the mind, freedom, economics, religion, and philosophy. He wrote about some of these in detail, and he was even a pioneer in some areas such as women's liberation, the issue of freedom, minority rights in democratic states, and the role they can play in strengthening the entity and power of modern states. His ideas, especially those related to defending women's equality, freedom, and democracy, also played a significant role in the development of Western political thought in particular and human thought in general. According to Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Mill is considered the "most famous British moral philosopher and the most influential in the nineteenth century... He made important contributions to logic, metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, political philosophy, and social theory… and perhaps was the main supporter of two important historical normative traditions - utilitarianism and liberalism." Mill's interest in poetry was not known to the Arab reader; rather, other traits overshadowed it, as he was a philosopher and rational thinker preoccupied with issues of empirical and rational thought. However, his engagement with poetry began early in his life, or as he himself says, after he experienced a mental crisis at the beginning of his youth: "I am now beginning to discover that I find meaning in the things I read or heard about the importance of poetry and art as tools of human culture."
