I can recall several stories about misfortune and my strange father as a writer, but this is the most prominent story currently. In fact, in 1939, Stockholm Publishing Company (without the author's permission) published a book called "Mein Kampf." The author was an amateur of literature at his best. His sentence construction was confused, foolish, his paragraphs disjointed, and he tended to speak at length about details and nonsense. And certainly Adolf Hitler was angry with everyone. So, the Führer's decision was to sue Stockholm Publishing and his sons for not obtaining permission to publish the manifesto of the prison. Therefore, the money, which was supposed to be spent on publicity for "Loraia" (Ask the Dust) in 1939 and to give John Fante the recognition he deserved, was spent on lawyers to settle a legal battle. My father was forgotten until Charles Bukowski mentioned to John Martin, owner of Black Sparrow Press, that he pulled a copy of "Ask the Dust" from a rotten shelf in the Los Angeles Public Library.
