Product description
This novel is an addition to the archive of great African literature, as alongside the themes that dominate the works of Abdulrazak Gurnah of migration and displacement, racism, and the post-colonial era; this book depicts an important but rarely highlighted subject, which is the lives and fates of soldiers who fight alongside the colonizer. It is a vivid reflection of the struggle and lives of African citizens who were kidnapped or sold to fight for Europe. "A novel documenting what humans gained and lost, in the pursuit of survival." (Time) "With a smooth language and flowing storytelling, Gurnah sheds a bright, honest light on Africa's bloody colonial past… Through the lives of his complex characters, he reveals the effects of colonization and power, and provides a glimpse into a lost world so it is not forgotten."
