What will Egypt be like in 2023? The wealthy have isolated themselves in the "Utopia" of the North Coast under the guard of American Marines; they indulge in drugs and practice forbidden pleasures to the fullest, while the poor outside are crushed, tearing each other's flesh to survive, without electricity, sewage, or medical care of any kind. But when the narrator and his friend "Germinal" sneak outside "Utopia" out of boredom and in search of a suitable "human prey," what happens threatens the stable situation with an explosion. Like the tolling of doomsday bells, this exciting novel rings the alarm, almost suggesting that as you finish it, is it really a fictional story, or has its author slipped from the near future to convey its horror to you with astonishing neutrality?
