This novel won the Booker Prize in 1972, and its author, the writer, critic, poet, painter, and veteran Marxist John Berger, or "the storyteller" (his preferred description), donated half of the monetary prize to the Black Panthers group in the United States of America, which caused a big controversy at the time. It was not surprising that he, who spent his life provoking debate whether in his artistic and literary work or in his opinions, stances, and life. John Berger, considered one of the most important critics of the last half-century, was himself opposed to the war in Iraq, wrote about Turkish workers in Germany, condemned the Israeli aggression on Lebanon in 1982, visited Palestine more than once, and wrote about Palestinian detainees and prisoners. He said about it: "We were aware of the Palestinian national struggle among other issues of peoples. The Palestinians are oppressed under the tyranny of the same forces we fight against. Palestine, in my view, was part of the broad global struggle." He continued to write, struggle, and support liberation movements around the world until his last breath on January 2, 2017. The novel "G" which revolves around the character Giovanni, who searches for love and seeks his romances during pivotal moments in history, is a embodiment of Berger's philosophy, who believes that politics, economics, history, and of course religion, cannot be separated from the most minute details of our daily lives, and that they are what determine our perspective on art, beauty, sex, love, and values. The author's choice of naming the protagonist as the title of his novel did not come out of nowhere; everything he wants to say, analyze, deconstruct, and address revolves around him, begins with him, and ends with him.
