Imam Al-Ghazali, may Allah have mercy on him, included in it a brief, guiding summary for travelers, and helpful answers for the confused and the questioners. It contains healing, by Allah’s permission, from a knowledgeable doctor of the ailments of hearts and minds, insightful into the inclinations of bodies and souls. He began it with an introduction explaining his reasons for writing, stating that his motivation was twofold: First: the corruption of time and belief, the many claims, and the differing opinions, especially philosophical ones, some of which contain deadly pitfalls that seduced some minds, and no ignorant person was safe from falling into them, nor was a wise scholar immune from being misled by their beginnings. Therefore, it was necessary to alert to all of that. Second: that the truth’s value and its boundary cannot be known unless its opposite and its contrary are also known; for opposites distinguish things. When aiming to alert to the safest way and the most correct path, it was necessary to mention the other, deviated path. In the book, Imam, may Allah have mercy on him, divides the speakers of the two testimonies into seven groups: The rough Arabs and Persians, the imitators, the theologians from the People of Sunnah and Hadith, the People of Certainty, the innovators and sinners, a group that added to innovation what was attributed to disbelief, and a group that outwardly showed Islam but inwardly concealed pure nullification. He also divided the Mi'raj into seven stages: The first stage is an introduction and preamble to what follows, explaining the meaning and reality of the Mi'raj, the composition of man from soul, spirit, and body, and an anatomical description of his physical form, its states, and its levels. The second confirms the persistence of the soul. The third discusses the creation of bodies and celestial spheres, their natures, and explains the meaning of Paradise, Hell, and the righteous angels. The fourth clarifies that Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth, and explains the meaning of light, the lantern, glass, lamp, and olive tree. The fifth explains the meaning of prophethood. The sixth discusses the types of news conveyed by the Messenger ﷺ, which are divided into two: news of the past and news of the future, some of which is allegorical and some not. It explains resurrection, the gathering, the transformation of the heavens and the earth, and other similar signs. The seventh explains the meaning of death, whether it is perfection or deficiency, and concludes the book with a chapter discussing happiness. May Allah benefit us with this knowledge and unite us with its people on the Day of Judgment. Amen. And Allah is the grant of success.
