Children of Shanghai

Shanghai Sons by Julie Min ... "An amazing and bold novel that takes us on a journey through time to explore a family living in global Shanghai, where we start from 2040 and gradually move back through time, passing through our present and recent past, to uncover the secrets of this family, their losses, and how its members reshape themselves over the years. The novel sails us inside the shared and separate lives of the Yang family members, where we experience their lives through each individual, and through the eyes of those around them.. From a nanny coming from the countryside, to a risk-loving chauffeur, to a grandmother carrying echoes of the past. We also see glimpses of the future, a city threatened by rising water levels, and the approaching shadow of the end. But we also realize in Julie Min's novel that some things do not change: love is complicated, life is not fair, and family will always remain connected by blood, secrets, and longing. "Shanghai Sons" is a skillfully built novel that touches the heart deeply, and offers us an unforgettable exploration of marriage, relationships, family, and the complex experience of time."
