Dictionary of Common Idiomatic Expressions by Nassef Mustafa Abdel Aziz ... This dictionary provides Arab learners and non-Arabic speakers with a valuable collection of common idiomatic expressions in the Arabic language (1346 idiomatic expressions), and explains their meanings, and trains them to use them in different contexts; with the aim of developing their linguistic wealth and enriching their writing style. An idiomatic expression is a group of two or more words functioning as a single unit, or a set of words whose combined meaning differs from their individual meanings: like "Labbā Nida' Rabbihi" meaning "he died" — and "Walla Al-Adbar" meaning "he fled" — and "Shadd Min Azrihi" meaning "he helped him" — and "Naseeb al-Asad" meaning "the lion's share" or "the biggest share" — as well as "Yusharu ilayh bil-binan" meaning "he is famous and well-known." It presents models of idiomatic expressions categorized according to topics — so in "blessing" we find expressions like "Raghad al-'Ayn" (prosperity), "Ibtasama lahu al-Haz" (luck smiled upon him), "Dahikat lahu al-Dunya" (the world laughed for him), "Safa lahu al-Jaw" (the atmosphere cleared for him), and "Fi Buhbuhah min al-'Aish" (in a state of abundance of living), as well as "Wulida wa Famahu Mil'aqa min Dhahab" (born with a gold spoon in his mouth). It is suitable for self-study, where the learner teaches himself, as well as for organized classroom study provided by the teacher.
