Despite the abundance of women's writings recently, in the field of autobiography, academic and critical studies of it have remained very few and highly concise, in contrast to the growing critical interest in male autobiography. This book addresses women's autobiography in contemporary Arabic literature, and the importance of this topic stems from the practice of Arab women engaging in a form of prose writing that has historically been and still is somewhat received with caution and embarrassment in Arab societies. While autobiography calls for boldness and self-disclosure, two traits that are not familiar in Arabic writings, especially women's writings, it can be observed that Arab women have written about themselves in various forms, some of which fall under the category of autobiography from certain perspectives, such as diaries, memoirs, travel literature, or letters. This type of text was weak and shy, but it has become present and bold in the last decades of the twentieth century. This book offers a reading of texts by famous women who admitted that their writings are autobiographies, texts that meet the conditions of modern autobiography in terms of recording private and almost complete aspects of their lives.
