Product description

Capitalism and desire by Todd McGowan ... The goal of this book is not to present another catalog of the horrors or flaws of capitalism; because that approach is the domain of other works, it tries instead to understand the reason why much satisfaction accompanies capitalism, and therefore the reason that explains its grip on those living within its structure. And the starting point for this authority is the relationship of capitalism with the desiring subjectivity, and this is the point that the first chapter will explore. As for the rest of the chapters, which form the core of this book, they will show how capitalism protects us from meeting the audience, from our predatory view, from sacrifice, from the absence of guarantees, from the infinite, from our unproductiveness, from love, and even from abundance; but it will also enable us to live the experience of sublimation in daily life, as the final chapter will demonstrate. The book ends by reflecting on the sublimity of capitalism, which is the same position from which it also started. The strength of capitalism’s survival and its resistance to critique are inseparable from its production of sublimation; which grants it the capacity for satisfaction; as capitalist subjects strongly cling to their dissatisfaction, and this discontent is the main thing that links them to capitalism. Regardless of how attractive and seductive it is, no commodity carries the allure of perpetual dissatisfaction.
