Hidden behind a hill in the sunny Provence countryside, there is a village of four stone houses, surrounded by a mixture of fields and greenery from all sides. Geuno describes every part of the French rural landscape in wonderful detail, but the hill is the one that dominates physically and spiritually over the land. In an attempt to rid the village and the valley of bad luck, the villagers set out to find a black cat roaming around from this point onward, humans enter an epic struggle between life and death, as the inhabitants of this village — whose population can be counted on fingers — stand in awe and amazement before the might of nature. The villagers struggle to save the land because they care so much about this small piece of land that is ours, and these houses in which we lived. Geuno's narration goes beyond mere storytelling, as he smoothly blends the threads of the villagers' lives and the heartbeat of the land itself. Since childhood, Jean Geuno traveled through the hills of his homeland Provence, where he listened to oral traditions, while at the same time studying Greek and Roman classics. His first novel "Hill" won the Brintano Award, and marked the beginning of the Pan trilogy and paved the way for his subsequent literary journey.
