"Al-Ghaliyah" is one of the finest and rarest perfumes with deep roots in Arab and Islamic history. While no specific historical records point to any caliph officially naming the fragrance "Al-Ghaliyah," it is believed that the name originated from an event in early Islamic history. It is said that Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with him) gifted a perfume to the Umayyad caliph, Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him). When asked about the cost of the gift, it was mentioned that a large sum was spent (Ghali/Expensive), to which Muawiyah replied, "This is 'Ghaliyah,'" hence the name.

Perfume has long been a symbol of luxury among the ruling classes in ancient Islamic and Arab societies, including caliphs, kings, ministers, and prominent figures. The deep, unique scent with strong sillage and longevity was used to enhance one’s identity and to reflect high taste, social status, and cultural wealth.

Perhaps the most famous and revered of all "Ghaliyah" perfumes was the one made from rare Tibetan musk and Ambergris.
