There are four sisters, each with her own story. The eldest sister, "Tsuruko," is a traditional model of a Japanese woman from the upper class in society. She sees, when given the chance, to revolt against her husband and to give her younger sisters their rights to their father's inheritance, which her husband has seized due to Japanese customs and traditions that make the husband's brother the guardian responsible and the head of the family after the father's death. Will "Tsuruko" revolt for her sisters' rights and her own that she has always neglected? And what about "Sachiko," the middle sister, who is considered a refuge for the two younger sisters when circumstances tighten around them... Will she accept to continue bearing their responsibilities, or will she prefer to get rid of them at the earliest opportunity? And what about the younger sisters "Yukiko" and "Taiko"; will they submit to societal pressures, or are ambition and hopes stronger?
