Publisher's note:
Nicolas Gomez Daviila was a man of wide interests, and his fragments reflect this truth. Although he was largely a self-educated man—having received excellent secondary education but never attending university—and instead relied on his enormous library, he can rightly be considered one of the great thinkers of the twentieth century. In research fields, he writes on religion, philosophy, politics, history, literature, aesthetics, and others.
But alongside these research interests, many of his fragments reveal a more personal dimension, with intimate notes on matters such as love and aging. Gomez Daviila was, in every respect, proud of his privacy and primarily concerned with seeking the truth himself. So why would he then record his thoughts and notes in fragments and then print them, even secretly?
It is very likely that Gomez Daviila was also a collection of subversive examples. He denied originality and affirmed that he wanted to attain wisdom himself. However, despite his insistence that he was not trying to persuade anyone to his way of thinking, he perhaps harbored some hope of awakening some souls from their certain slumber. Of course, Gomez Daviila did not resort to loud or vulgar methods to wake us, his contemporaries; he wrote his fragments in a way that those who encounter them can draw from them ancient wisdom, yet it remains forever new.
