Between the duality of life and death, and secret and public, Scottish novelist Jackie Kay explores in her novel "Trumpet," which won the Guardian Prize in 1998, everything that constitutes excavations of the human heart and mind. The novel raises urgent questions of contemporary times, through the axis of identity: how do humans create a meaning that defines their identities, in circumstances that tear them apart, break their convictions and expectations regarding what they believed to be the simplest and most certain truths?
