Anansi and the Thunder; Folk Tales from West Africa Publication date: 20/04/2015 Publisher: Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Center for the Arabic Language Overview Nile and Furat: This series gathers the heritage of peoples through stories, myths, and folk tales, distributed across 72 books, selected from works by prominent anthropologists at the end of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century, during the peak rise of anthropology when many scholars explored and recorded the heritage of peoples. Publisher's note: These folk tales are based on the folklore of the people of (Gold Coast), now the (Ghana) Republic, spanning from British colonization in 1821 until independence in 1957. They have been carefully chosen to introduce the reader to the ideas and customs of West African Blacks. Many of the "Anansi" or "Spider" tales, which are the first part of this collection, are still told today based on observing the spider's methods and unique characteristics, as it is a wise and cunning creature at the same time. The second part (various tales) offers spontaneous explanations for cultural, biological, or human or animal behaviors, with a remarkable similarity to European myths or fairy tales.
