A complete mythology of Macandal remained, accompanied by magical chants memorized by the whole people, and still sung in the celebrations of the Vodou religion. In this novel, Alejo Carpentier draws inspiration from this mythology to present a series of extraordinary events that occurred in Haiti, during a specific era that does not extend to a short human lifespan, and he presents them through the character of T. Noel, who finally realizes how a person can find his greatness and ultimate scope in the kingdom of this world."
