About the book: A novel similar to an autobiography of the Arab Eastern princess and daughter of a great Arab Sultan who, more than a hundred years ago, broke with her people's traditions, married a German young man, and abandoned her homeland and her father's kingdom for him. She left a life of luxury and palaces to be swept away by fate to foreign lands between London and Berlin. She replaced a life of mingling and revealing in Europe with a life of women and hijab in the East. Under her Arabic name, Lady Salma bint Saeed, she bore a non-Arabic name, Princess Emily Ruth. Then life became narrow for her after twenty years, or she herself grew tired of European life and longed to return to her homeland. But the doors of return closed in her face, so she dedicated herself to writing in German about her life story and experiences, recalling her homeland and her people.
This rare and strange story, almost like a fairy tale, which few in the East have heard of despite its widespread in the West, is the subject of this book, which we present to Arabic readers today in translation. The princess is Lady Salma, daughter of Mr. Saeed bin Sultan, Sultan of Oman and Zanzibar (1804-1856), and granddaughter of Imam Ahmed bin Saeed, founder of the ruling dynasty in Oman.
