Book title: The Other Sleep Author: Julian Grindar Publisher: Dar Al-Ain Publishing Summary of the book: Green begins the story from above the Eina Bridge in Paris, the child protagonist who fears lying to his parents but they do not ask him about anything related to him, so they remove his embarrassment. His mother, who lives in her own world from which she never emerges, and his frustrated, angry father all the time about something he cannot face. He sits training himself for dialogue, and in the end throws his scattered papers in the faces of those who angered him. The child becomes a young man, accompanied by Claude, his cousin's son, for a few years, then leaves him to join the French army, and his father passes away in an unfortunate end. His mother's resources decrease, and they move to a smaller house and a more austere life. He wanders more aimlessly, his isolation and distraction increase. In love, he tries hard to find a place, sleeping under doorsteps to watch his beloved's feet move with a friend of hers, a cold wind slapping his face coming from the small crack in front of him. The attempt fails, he does not succeed in his studies, and he does not know what he should do in his life. His mother also departs, falling on the doorstep of the house, half inside and half outside. He does not know what to do with her body, so the uncle takes over the matter, trying to tell him a little about the realities of life, which startle him. He traces his memory back to their rural house, and he only feels at peace during a short trip there with his cousin, who no longer wants his presence. A novel about the loneliness, alienation, and solitude that the European person felt during World War II, and his struggle between internal feelings and desire to live. By the riverbank, he recounts his story, with an open beginning and ending, like the flow of calm, shining waves under the sun. He knows that when he grows older, he will specifically remember this, and his heart will be content.
