Book title: About Benevolence Author: Lucius Annaeus Seneca Publisher: Afaaq for Publishing and Distribution Category: Novels Number of pages: Book summary: Seneca is considered one of the most famous ancient Greek philosophers despite belonging to a philosophical current that spanned three centuries before him. This is the Stoic school; the school founded by Zeno under the name "The Stoa" around 307 BC. Historians usually divide the philosophers of this school, or rather this school of thought, into three eras: the ancient era, or the early Stoicism, which extends through the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, and its most prominent figures were three: Zeno, the founder; Cleanthes; and Chrysippus, who is considered the second founder of the school. Then came the Middle Stoicism, which extended through the 2nd and 1st centuries BC, with its most notable figures being Panaetius, Posidonius, and later, Musonius Rufus, who became famous for his encyclopedic knowledge to the extent that some historians compared him to Aristotle in the richness and diversity of his intellectual output. The Stoic school succeeded in this era in reconciling the teachings of the early Stoics with those of Plato and Aristotle, attracting many who studied at the Academy, the Platonist school, and the Stoic school of the Peripatetics. Then came the era of Late or Modern Stoicism, or Roman Stoicism, since political, military, and intellectual dominance shifted to Rome at this time. This late period of Stoicism lasted several centuries from the 1st century AD, although its greatest philosophers—Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius—lived between the 1st BC and the 2nd AD, with the last of them, Emperor Marcus Aurelius, passing away in 180 AD.
