The discussion of political theory in Islam at the present time is considered one of the most important duties and necessities of the current historical phase; as political theory is not only the vision that embodies the values and ideas adopted by its proponents, but also represents a methodology for viewing and working. What distinguishes this book is its analytical perspective on the most important ideas and currents — Sunni and Shia — that interacted with political theory at the level of theorization and field practice, allowing the author to connect the two with a single path, while emphasizing and studying the scientific accumulation achieved in the conceptual framework of political theory throughout history, and its social and cultural influence. The author in this book highlighted the most important challenges facing the intellectual journey and field movement to understand and implement political theory in the context of old and contemporary Islamic political history, through its temporal dimension and its broad extension across Sunni and Shia currents and schools. The book contains two parts; the first discusses “Tracking the course and development of the Islamic experience in political thought,” and the second explains “Challenges and problems of building an Islamic political theory.” The first part includes four chapters: the first served as an introduction to Islamic political theorization, the second discussed the development of the political experience in Islamic history from the time of the Prophet until the fall of the Ottoman Caliphate, then the third chapter covered the development of modern and contemporary Islamic political thought, and the fourth addressed the development of modern and contemporary Shia political thought. The second part includes six chapters and a final discussion: the first chapter discusses “Challenges and problems of ijtihad in the political field,” the second addresses “Challenges and problems of the system of governance in the Islamic perspective,” the third discusses “Challenges and problems of building concepts of sovereignty and legitimacy,” the fourth talks about “Civil state issues in contemporary Islamic thought,” the fifth discusses “Challenges and problems of legalizing the human rights situation in Islam,” and the sixth focuses on “Challenges and problems of political violence in Islamic thought.” In the final discussion, the author aimed to clarify and demonstrate the manifestations of the contemporary Islamic political reality and future prospects. The author in this book sought to provide the Arab library with a reference book, and he is among the few who combined academic specialization with popular and official political practice.
