How we disappeared

While I was contemplating writing the novel, I talked to some friends about it (they are not Singaporean), all of them are well-informed, skillful writers, but they only heard vaguely about women of pleasure, and definitely nothing about the genocide that happened on the island. I was annoyed that a people's history could simply be left to the winds. I never thought of myself as a historical novelist, nor as someone who would spend years researching, but I was in this situation, furious at how insignificant we seemed for the rest of the world to care about us, and my need to write about Wang Di.
