When talking about coffee cooperatives, no one rivals Costa Rica in establishing and managing outstanding and successful cooperatives, and De Dota Coffee Farmers Cooperative Society is one of the most distinguished integrated societies. It was founded in 1960 and today includes about 900 members. The society is characterized by unlimited support for the environment, having obtained the carbon-neutral certificate, which is the first of its kind in coffee processing. Some of its equipment is powered by water energy, and drying machines operate on natural fuel from the coffee husks remaining from previous batch processing, and peeling equipment reduces energy and water consumption. Members of the society dedicate their full attention to farm management throughout the year, and during harvest they deliver coffee cherries to the processing center, which applies the best quality standards in sorting, purifying, drying, and peeling the coffee. This crop is processed naturally under the sun as well as with drying machines, confirming the society’s commitment to reducing water consumption and precisely applying natural processing protocols. One of the society’s pillars is supporting the economic sustainability of its members by providing various employment opportunities. The farm owns its own roastery, operates 3 cafes, and a barista training center, which helps foster farmers’ passion for quality production.
