LES FLEURS DU DECHET – I AM TRASH

Set aside marketing for a moment - no, I am fresh (or Les Fleurs du Déchet) does not smell like garbage! Etat Libre d’Orange is a brand known for creating high-concept art, and this is no exception. The idea is to raise awareness about the ongoing benefit of items that are usually discarded, and to find a way to reuse these elements to create something beautiful in itself. It is a perfume made entirely from "found objects" such as fruit peels and leftover wood shavings from extraction by the perfume or food industry. This makes perfect sense. After all, some of the most luxurious materials in the perfume industry are derived from leftovers. Amber, for example, is a flow from a whale washed ashore. Oud is the response of the tree's white cells to a fungal infection. And so on and so forth. But don't worry, because I Am Trash is far from the harsh and dirty aspects of natural waste as you might imagine. It is a lovely fruity-floral perfume that wraps a bouquet of wild strawberries, apples, roses, and citrus in a foamy musk and asks you to forgive its dramatic backstory. There is nothing dark or rotten lurking in the corners. It is a bright, sunny blend of fruits and flowers, with clean musk, sparkling Iso E Super, and a piece of creamy sandalwood at the base holding it all together. Etat Libre d’Orange could have named this I Am Joy and no one would blink. But we love the name I Am Trash because it’s a reminder to be more thoughtful about what we throw away, and it bears witness to the fact that sometimes, true beauty comes from trash.
