Alindor, a Reykjavik police inspector, investigates the murder of an elderly man who was isolated from the world named Holberg in his apartment in the basement of a building from which a strange smell emanates. He is assisted by his colleagues Sigurdur Olafsson and Eilnborg, where they discover a mysterious note on his body and a black-and-white photo of a gravestone. Eilnborg begins to uncover evidence, and when he discovers more facts about Holberg's past, he realizes that there are connections with other criminal acts that remained hidden or that the police could not uncover. By following the clues of these evidence, he is able, through modern genetic techniques in criminology, to move forward toward solving this mysterious case.
