Product description
Imam Al-Ghazali says that his motivation for writing this book, nicknamed the Criterion of Knowledge, are two important purposes. One is to clarify the methods of thinking and reasoning, and to illuminate the paths of analogies and lessons, for theoretical sciences, since they are not innate or instinctive, are necessarily sought and acquired. Moreover, as many misconceptions and misleading lights have increased in rational matters, and the mirror of the mind has not been free from confusions of illusions and deceptions of imagination, he arranged this book as a criterion for reflection and consideration, a balance for investigation and contemplation, a sharpening of the mind, and a catalyst for the strength of thought and reason. It is, in relation to the evidence of the minds, like the poetry to the prosody, and like syntax to grammatical inflections. Therefore, it is impossible to distinguish between invalid and valid evidence, correct and sound, or flawed and defective, except through this book. The second motivation of Imam Al-Ghazali was to review what the Imam included in his book "The Incoherence of the Philosophers," as he debated them in their language and addressed them according to the terminology they agreed upon in logic. In this book, the meanings of those terms are revealed. This is the more specific motivation, while the first is broader and more important, because its benefit encompasses all theoretical sciences, both rational and jurisprudential. Imam Al-Ghazali states that examining jurisprudence is not different from examining rational sciences, in their arrangement, conditions, and criteria, but only in the sources of premises. He says that since, in his time, people's inclinations leaned towards jurisprudence and it was their main focus, his book includes a classification of debating methods in this field, starting with the basis of disagreement, then in the chapter of reasoning, then in the protection of premises, and finally in the book of Principles and Forests, which is the ultimate goal of this research, following the method of rational reasoning in its arrangement and conditions. As a result, in this book, there are jurisprudential examples to include its benefit, so that it encompasses all types and their usefulness.
