Product description

The book "Tareekh Al-Tabari" "History of the Prophets and Kings" or "Nations and Kings" is one of the most important source books in the field of history, as it is considered the most comprehensive historical work among Arab writers, based on a well-defined methodology, and presented in a thorough inductive approach, with the narration reaching a high level of trustworthiness and honesty. It completes what previous historians such as Al-Yaqoubi, Al-Baladhuri, Al-Waqidi, and others have done, and paved the way for those who came after him, such as Al-Mas'udi, Ibn Miskawayh, Ibn Al-Athir, and Ibn Khaldun. It is not limited to Islamic history but also chronicles what happened before the Hijra, starting from the beginning of creation. Al-Tabari began his history by mentioning the evidence for the occurrence of time, and that the first thing created after that was the pen, followed by other things gradually, according to what has been narrated in the traditions. Then he mentioned Adam, and the stories of the prophets and messengers that followed, arranged in the order they are mentioned in the Torah, touching on the events that occurred during their times, explaining what is mentioned in the Holy Quran about them, and referring to the stories of the kings who were contemporary to them and the Persian kings, along with the nations that came after the prophets until the mission of the Prophet, peace be upon him. As for the Islamic section, he organized it according to events from the year of the Hijra until the year 302 AH, mentioning in each year the events and famous days that occurred. The value of the book lies in its ability to gather all the materials contained in the books of Hadith, Tafsir, language, literature, biographies, military campaigns, history of events and men, poetry, speeches, treaties, and texts, and to arrange them appropriately, presenting them in a splendid and refined manner, linking each narration to its author and each opinion to its speaker. He also included in his book useful chapters and diverse excerpts from the texts of books that have been affected by the passage of time. He quoted sayings of scholars that can only be found in this book. The method followed by Al-Tabari in his writing is that of the narrators, which is to mention the narrated events with their chains of transmission so that they connect to their companions. He rarely expresses an opinion in this regard. This method he used most of the time in the book, and elsewhere he quotes from other books, explicitly naming the book.
