Rwanda enjoys an ideal environment for coffee cultivation, due to its high altitude, regular rainfall, volcanic soil with organic structure, and abundant biodiversity. All of this contributes to bringing out the best in coffee elements. Most of the harvest produced in Rwanda comes from small farmers, and recent statistics estimate that there are nearly half a million Rwandan farmers working on agricultural areas not exceeding one hectare per family. Coffee is cultivated in most parts of the country, especially along Lake Kivu and specifically in the southern province where Rwandan farmers organize themselves into cooperatives, and participate in central milling services or locally known as washing stations.
