Product description

The second painting depicts a specific type of rhododendron discovered in the Himalaya-Sikkim mountains (Sikkim was then an independent kingdom, now a state in India). The painting shows the rhododendron flower in its vibrant natural colors, with detailed features of the leaves and flowers, and sometimes enlarged parts of the stamens, pistil, or ovaries for scientific purposes. The painting was created by Walter Hood Fitch based on accurate field drawings prepared by Joseph Dalton Hooker during his journey. This painting is a wonderful example of Fitch's ability to combine botanical accuracy with artistic beauty, highlighting "the magnificent form and bright colors of these flowering shrubs" (Oak Spring Flora) (1849-1851).
