ديوان مجنون ليلى

In this book, Adnan Zaki Darwish provides an explanation and study of the well-known "Diwan of Majnun Layla." The book is divided into two parts. The first part is a biography of the poet Qays ibn al-Mulawwah, also known as Majnun Layla, and describes the era and the political and social environment in which he lived (the Umayyad era). The author then discusses the characteristics of chaste poetry and Bedouin customs, as well as the story of Majnun's love for Layla as recounted in Abu al-Faraj al-Isfahani's "Kitab al-Aghani" (Book of Songs), Ibn al-Mu'tazz's "Tabaqat al-Shu'ara" (Categories of Poets), al-'Umari's "Masa'il al-Absar" (Questions of Sight), and Dawud al-Antaki's "Tazyeen al-Aswaq fi Akhbar al-'Ushshaq" (The Adornment of Markets in the Tales of Lovers).

The second part of the book is dedicated to the Diwan itself. Its poems are arranged according to the meters of classical Arabic poetry, with rhyme and meter, and are distributed alphabetically, beginning with rhymes ending in hamza and ending with rhymes ending in ya'. This section includes explanations of the words and their meanings. The anthology concludes with accounts from "The Story of Majnun 'Amir and His Lineage," as well as his poetry and his story with 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf and others, along with an artistic study of his poems by several narrators and historians.

From Majnun's fragments to Layla, under the title "Layla the Sick," we read: "They say Layla is sick in Iraq, so why are you not worried, you who are my friend? / May God heal the sick in Iraq, for I am compassionate towards all the sick in Iraq. / If she is sick in Iraq, then I am drowning in a sea of ​​rights. / I wander through the lands and their expanses, and I have no way to Layla this morning…"
