A brief about the book: a Turkish novel about his arrival in Germany, and after a short period of his stay in Berlin, he meets "Maria" by a strange coincidence, and the love relationship between them extends until the end of the novel. The novel appears to be of the typical classic love stories common in world literature, but it is distinguished by two main points. The first point is Sabahuddin Ali's deep dive into the human soul without complex psychological theories and their intricacies, through explaining the character of Rafiq and the reasons that led him to be attached to Maria to the extent of reaching a state of complete indifference to life, aware that he lives alone despite his life full of noise among his family consisting of his wife, his children, his sister-in-law, and her husband. The matter also seems to be the same for Maria, whose childhood and upbringing played a central role in shaping her strange personality, which Rafiq was able to understand due to his calm personality and great love for her, to the extent of literally sacrificing everything. Rafiq Effendi's loneliness did not come out of nowhere; it was a purely personal decision for a sin he committed against the one he loved, with no possibility of forgiveness. Therefore, the reader, who will sympathize with the beautiful love story, has no choice but to sympathize with Rafiq Effendi, his feelings, and his complex life, which Sabahuddin Ali alludes to from the first pages of the 236-page novel, saying: "Why do they live, I wonder? What do they find in this life?" The author's name: Sabahuddin Ali. Publisher: Maqbara Al-Kutub.
