About the book
Woman
Una Donna
It is considered the first feminist novel in Italy.
It was published in 1906 and had a significant impact on shattering many certainties in Italian awareness.
The novel received international attention and was translated into several languages.
It was written by Sibila Alleramo, whose real name is Rina Vachio (1876 – 1960), who says she lived three lives.
The first, as a mother and wife, detailed in this book.
The second, she volunteered to serve the needy in one of Rome’s shelters.
The third, the last thirty years of her life, which she spent in writing and working.
Sibila lived fifty years after the Woman novel.
She faced obstacles, experienced conflicts and wars, but overcame all of them.
She attempted suicide in moments of weakness, but after the death of her colleague Cesare Pavesi, she concluded that she fears death:
“Yes. I am afraid, and the only freedom that the communist does not possess is: suicide,”
so she preferred working, giving lectures, traveling, and writing until the last days of her life.
However, no book of hers brought her the fame she gained after this novel.
