About the book
The Catalan novel (Jordi Punti)
This is a novel of the traditional "Spanish" type, although "Catalan to the core," because Catalonia is part of Spain, and because Catalan writers are closer to their Spanish counterparts than to Latin American writers, who are neither of their own kind nor of their language.
This is a close-to-easy language, flowing events novel, even if intertwined. Its events are not linear, but its map is clear and its paths are gentle and understandable, not burdening the translator to strain his ear nor the reader to get bored and leave it.
A two-part evening film: the first in black and white, and the second in color.
It is a 100% Catalan novel, so its author is Catalan, and its original edition is in Catalan. Its atmosphere is that of Catalonia ascending toward Europe.
There is no mention or reference to what is south of Barcelona and Catalonia.
As for the scenes depicted, they take us through Barcelona and its outskirts.
They move us through its streets, squares, buildings, parks, and mountains.
As if the Regional Tourism Council of the Catalan government commissioned Jordi Punti to write what he wrote.
Tourism in Barcelona with words, just like Egyptian films do when they show you Cairo and Alexandria while you are in your city and country, taking you into Egyptian homes to see their customs and taste their dishes while you are in your home.
The author of "The Lost Suitcases" (Las maletas perdidas or Maletes perdudes) in his original Catalan edition is Jordi Punti (Barcelona 1967), a writer, journalist, and translator.
This novel is the only one among the four most famous short works he wrote in 1998 (Pell d’armadillo [Armadillo Skin]), 2002 (Animals tristos [Sad Animals]), 2010 (Maletes perdudes [The Lost Suitcases]), and 2011 (Els castellans [The Castilians]).
It won the Lletra d’Oro Award in 2011, which is awarded annually for the best work written in Catalan.
The reasons for awarding the prize stated:
A novel whose events flow and intertwine without intersections: a novel that contains as much narration as documentation and evocation of places and atmospheres.
A novel written without haste, with the professionalism of an author who contemplates what he writes, documents what he writes, and weighs what he writes.
He evaluates every word, every need, every movement, and every indication, and marks the mirage of every time and the illusion of every place.
