Summary of the novel
And I am at most five years old. He gave me a small pistol made for me specially in Moscow to shoot birds. When I shot at some valuable turkeys of my father, he did not punish me, but praised my shooting skill. I killed my first bear in the Caucasus when I was ten. My whole life is one long hunt. I joined the army — which is expected of noble sons — and for a while I led a squad of Cossack cavalry, but my true interest always remained hunting. I have hunted every type of prey in every country, and it is impossible to count the animals I have killed.
Critics described "The Most Dangerous Game" as "the most famous short story ever written in English." Since its publication, Richard Connell's story gained great popular acclaim for its plot, which combines adventure and excitement with a Gothic story tone, raising questions about human nature and the human capacity for violence, and offering comments on the world of the early twentieth century, which experienced significant social and political changes after World War I.
The story was first published in 1924, and in the year of its publication, it won the O. Henry Award for short story. It was subsequently printed repeatedly in standalone editions and in many anthologies of short stories, and translated into dozens of languages.
