Common name: Basil French
Scientific name: Ocimum basilicum
Also known as: White Basil
The French basil is an annual herbaceous plant that can have a longer growing period in areas with mild winters. It is considered shorter in height, smaller in size, and its branches are green and tender, unlike regular or local basil, which tends to harden. Its leaves are shorter, wider, and light green. The French basil is distinguished by its pleasant scent.
French basil flower: Its flowers are initially green, then turn white, and have a fragrant aroma. It blooms during the summer season.
French basil seeds: Small-sized seeds, about 0.2 cm, black in color.
French basil planting season: It is cultivated in mid-spring, and it can also be grown year-round in warm areas and agricultural protected zones.
Suitable climate and soil for growing French basil: French basil prefers to grow in soil exposed to sunlight for long periods. Additionally, the soil pH should be between 6 and 6.5, which is suitable for most vegetables. It also grows in moist, low-salinity soil, and should be watered regularly.
How to cultivate French basil: Ensure that the frost has ended before planting seeds directly into the soil at a depth not exceeding 1 cm. After five to seven days, the seeds will sprout. Once the delicate seedlings develop three or four leaves, they should be separated with a distance of approximately 15 to 30 cm by removing excess seeds. It can also be fertilized with organic compost at least once.
Its benefits and uses: Grown for decoration as it is a flowering plant with a pleasant aromatic scent. Its leaves are used as a flavoring in Western dishes. French basil contains lower amounts of phenols.
Original habitat of French basil: France.
