The Riya'a Al-Kamooni or Bamboozia or Jambolan is a tree that grows in tropical climates, resistant to drought, and tolerates various types of soil. The tree is cultivated for its ornamental value, fragrant flowers, or as a fruit-bearing tree. Jambolan fruits contain a high percentage of vitamin A and C. The tree has many medicinal properties, as its seeds, leaves, and bark are used in various alternative healing systems.
This plant is considered a slow-growing species, reaching up to 30 meters in height, and can live for more than 100 years. Its dense leaves provide shade and are cultivated solely for their ornamental value. At the base of the tree, the bark is rough and dark gray, becoming lighter gray and smoother at the top. The wood is water-resistant after oven-drying; therefore, it is used in railway sleepers and engine fittings in wells. It is sometimes used in furniture making and inexpensive rural housing.
The leaves, which have a smell similar to turpentine, are pinkish when young and turn into a shiny dark green with medium yellowish grass as they mature. The leaves are used as feed for livestock due to their good nutritional value. Riya'a Al-Kamooni trees start flowering from March to April. The flowers are fragrant, small, about 5 mm in diameter. The fruits develop by May or June and resemble large berries.
