Common name: Gazania Scientific name: Gazania Gazania is the most frost and drought tolerant varieties. These two qualities make it adaptable to many environments in its native South Africa as well as in the countries of the Arabian Peninsula, where it is considered one of the ground covers relied upon. Despite its resistance to soil drought, it benefits from repeated watering in sandy soils that allow good drainage. The plant needs to grow in a place exposed to direct sunlight, as the flowers open during the day and close at sunset. Light yellow flowers appear abundantly in spring and summer, and occasionally in the other seasons. Only a few plant species are capable of producing abundant flowers each year under harsh conditions like Gazania. The plant can crawl moderately and produces few sparse branches, reaching a height of 40 cm. The leaves are alternate, 10 cm long and 3 cm wide, oval in shape. Gazania is ideal as a ground cover for rock gardens, and its silvery leaves provide a good contrast in a mixture of plants along garden edges, flower beds, and dense plantings. The inside and outside of the leaf are covered with dense fuzz, and sometimes after several years, the old leaves fall to the bottom of the plant, which then requires pruning or complete removal. Gazania propagates directly from seeds sown in early spring. For cultivated varieties, propagation by division or stem cuttings in spring or autumn is preferred.
