The leaves are feathery compound and the leaf is large and oval. It is one of the most durable and drought-resistant trees. Its seeds are very rich in oil, and its wood has high economic value. Native to Africa. The African mahogany tree grows in river forests and upper savannahs. The tree has a deep root system of its own, with its growth phase concentrated in the first year of its life in developing its roots that extend deeply. The wood is reddish-brown, heavy, durable, rigid enough to withstand decay, yet easy to work with, accepts polishing and finishing easily, and is used in making furniture and musical instruments. Its seeds are very rich in oil, 67%, which contains a high percentage of oleic acid and is used in West Africa for cooking and in cosmetics. The tree bark is used for various medicinal purposes, including treating fevers caused by malaria and stomach ailments, and is applied externally to treat skin rashes.
