Retractor is an instrument used to retract the lips, cheeks, and tongue away from the working area during dental procedures. It helps the dentist improve visibility and access to the teeth while keeping soft tissues away from the instruments and treatment area.
How to Use in Detail:
Select the appropriate retractor: The dentist selects the appropriate type and size according to the treatment area and the patient’s mouth size.
Prepare the patient: Position the patient comfortably and make sure the working area is accessible.
Place the retractor: Gently insert the retractor into the mouth and position the retracting part between the lip or cheek and the teeth, depending on the area requiring retraction.
Retract the soft tissues: Secure the retractor so that it keeps the lips or cheeks away from the teeth. Some types can also be used to retract the tongue.
Check patient comfort: Make sure the retractor is stable and does not apply excessive pressure or cause discomfort.
Perform the treatment: Once the soft tissues are retracted, the dentist has better visibility and more working space for procedures such as restorations, photography, impressions, digital scanning, and other dental procedures depending on the type of retractor.
Remove the retractor: After completing the procedure, gently release and remove the retractor, then check the soft tissues for any irritation or injury.
How does the dentist benefit from it?
A retractor provides the dentist with a wider working field and better visibility. It keeps the lips, cheeks, and tongue away from the treatment area, making dental procedures easier, more comfortable, and more precise.
