The novel is set during the Balkan Revolution and the conflict with the Ottoman Empire. Amidst the preparations for war, Constantine's father attempts to betray his country for personal glory, leading to a bitter and profound debate between father and son about the meaning of patriotism.

In this work, Al-Manfaluti emphasizes the fundamental necessity of loving one's homeland, regardless of the temptations offered or the magnitude of the sacrifices required—even if that sacrifice is life itself.
