رواية نفسية فريدة بين أعمال نجيب محفوظ ، تحوَّل فيها إلى الغوص في أعماق النفس البشرية والتفتيش في خباياها الدفينة ، مرتكزًا على شخصية ( كامل رؤبة لاظ ) والبيئة النفسية والاجتماعية التي نشأ فيها فنتج عنها أزمته النفسية والسلوكية ، بدايةً من طفولته وعلاقته بأمه التي طُلِّقت من أبيه العربيد ، وفقدَت أبنَيها الآخرين اللذَين وُضِعا تحت وصاية طليقها ، ما جعلها ترتبط بابنها كامل لدرجة مَرَضية ، فصار الأخير أسيرًا لعلاقته بأمه

موصوماً بالخجل الشديد والرهاب الاجتماعي ، فاقدًا للثقة عاجزًا عن مواجهة المجتمع ومتطلبات الحياة.

نشرت الرواية عام 1948 وانتقلت لشاشة السينما عام 1970.

It begins with his childhood and his relationship with his mother, who was divorced from his profligate father and lost her other two sons to his guardianship. This trauma led her to form a pathologically intense bond with Kamel, leaving him a prisoner of this relationship—stamped with severe shyness, social anxiety, and a total lack of confidence that renders him unable to face society or the demands of life

First published in 1948, the novel was later adapted into a major motion picture in 1970
