Turgenev's novel of 1859, set in the summer before the Crimean War, follows Yelena Stakhova as she turns away from the comfortable Moscow world of suitors and salons toward Insarov, a Bulgarian bent on the liberation of his country. It is the book in which Turgenev asked, through Uvar Ivanovich, when Russia would produce men of its own.
The pleasure of this copy lies in its making. B. M. Basov designed the volume throughout, from the blue two-colour title opening to the loose, confident pen drawings that head the chapters and the striking portrait of the author facing the text. The violet cloth carries his silhouette of a seated woman stamped in black, a binding that marks the Moscow house at the height of its book design.
The Foreign Languages Publishing House of Moscow prepared Russian literature for readers of English, and its illustrated volumes of the 1950s are now sought for their typography, their bindings and their artists.
