Philosophy of Optimism — B. G. Kuznetsov

First printing, 1977 — Progress Publishers, Moscow

A Soviet philosopher of science takes the oldest question of hope and asks it as a scientific one: on what rational ground may a thinking mind expect the world to become better? Boris Grigoryevich Kuznetsov moves from the theory of knowledge to the frontiers of physics and molecular biology, then closes with the economics of scientific progress. The copy offered here is a first printing of the English translation, preserved in the publisher's rose cloth binding with its gilt series device, accompanied by the original "Current Problems" dust jacket.

Kuznetsov spent decades at the USSR Academy of Sciences, held membership of the Academy of the History of Science in Paris, and presided over the Albert Einstein Committee of the International Union of the History and Philosophy of Science. Among his best-known titles are Einstein and The Development of Physical Thinking from Galileo to Einstein.

Progress Publishers printed its English-language philosophy of science list in Moscow for export, and copies that survive complete with the original jacket are the ones collectors of Soviet imprints look for.
